The best conference schwag?

Having spoken at almost twenty major conferences in the last few years, I've picked up a fair selection of schwag items and giveaways. Now that we are busy organizing our first For A Beautiful Web events, I'd love to know what the best shwag items you've received are.

We want to make our master class events really memorable and as a reminder of what we hope will be a great day, we plan to give our attendees something really special although I can't reveal our plans just yet. Planning this made me look back at some of the items that I have brought home in the past.

Laptop/conference bags

Most of the top-quality conferences seem to offer a bag of sorts. Usually these are handy during conference days for carrying around programs and other assorted, sponsor related bits of paper. I'm not sure about you, but when I bring a bag home it soon finds itself under the bed. I'm always torn. Do I keep it as a memento or do I let it go to a new home when I de-clutter? No matter how nice the bags are, before too long I'm handing them to a bemused lady at the local charity shop. I feel guilty, it seems so wasteful.

Laptop sleeves

As they have with all aspects of An Event Apart, Jeffrey Zeldman and Eric Meyer have an eye for great shwag. In New Orleans this year I was given a fantastic laptop sleeve that I use every day. The An Event Apart branding is subtle (so I don't feel like a walking advertisement) and as this sleeve has handles it has replaced the Incase sleeve that I bought at the Apple Store.

Pens

An Event Apart is also top of the pen charts. No plastic ballpoint is good enough for Zeldman and Meyer and I still use their lovely, fat, silver pen almost every day. I will be very sad when it runs out. (So it's a good job I grabbed more than my fair share in New Orleans and armed guards won't stop me doing the same in Chicago in October.)

Mugs

Although I always seem to be late to the conference mug snatching party, at Web Directions South in Sydney last year, Adobe did give me two branded thermal mugs to carry halfway around the world. Unfortunately they didn't last long, both sprang leaks and after a few months holding pencils they were destined to become landfill.

Clothing

T-shirts always seem popular, but most of the conferences I've attended have left dressing their attendees to their sponsors. MediaTemple know how to put on a good party and their long-sleeved giveaway makes an excellent winter chest warmer too. I still wear my Internet Explorer Seven shirt with pride and somewhere in a drawer I'm keeping a Macromedia shirt that must already be an antique. I've had too many good shirts given to mention and I think that a well designed, well made shirt is one of the best freebies I can pick up.

Stuff

There's been so much more that I've brought home, discarded and forgotten about. Luggage tags, buttons, badges and pins. The best, really useful items I keep, the rest inevitably become trash or are given away. I do feel guilty about that, it seems such a waste of effort, materials and money.

So what's your take on giveaways? Does schwag make a difference to how you feel about an event you've attended? What is the best, most useful item that you've ever picked up at a conference or workshop and if there was one freebie item you'd love, what would it be?

My favorite schwag was Event Apart’s jump memory stick with copies of all the presentation slides on it. Very useful in both ways. It would be even better if the memory stick had a lot of excess space on it or was actually an iPod. ;-)

New Zealand > Webstock ‘08 > Laptop / shoulder bag.

I use it every day and it gets admiring glances and comments everywhere :)

The best schwag I came away with was a really nice nylon messenger bag when I was working as a youth pastor. I used it for several years going on retreats and such since it was “weather-proof”.

The smorgasbord of goodies I snagged at An Event Apart this year in New Orleans was great not only due to the smart design and high quality of the items, but also because of the thoughtfulness that went into providing things sure to come in handy whilst at the event. Keys to memorable shwag: appealing/relevant/consistent design and solid utility. Actually, those things seem like some pretty key elements to a memorable website as well… Guess it’s all relative, eh? Anyhow, catch a glimpse of the aforementioned AEA goods at http://bit.ly/3XZ0tw.

Cheers,
Nick

Pens, pads of paper, or cool gadgetry.
Most of all, something that fits in a computer bag, I think.
I like the memory stick idea, though that would be difficult if there are many presenters and duplication is manual.

Stickers is ALWAYS a good one. So are buttons.

the slightly oversized Adobe tshirt I picked up for my petit blonde GF which she wears in bed if I’m lucky.

well, gadgets are always nice :) my favourite one was a themed flash stick with all workshop material.
...and with the mention of shoulderbags - I had to think how lovely a bag with the background of your website here would look…..

So long as I get a pen and a branded notepad (and maybe a t-shirt), I’m generally happy. Most of the stuff I’ve picked up from conferences gets binned within a few days, or it collects dust for a year. Then i bin it.

Maybe something a little different, you mentioned mugs, so how about something a bit more British and go for branded Teapots for one… or even just a normal teapot…

Tea is surely a major force when creating a beautiful web…

I would like it anyway!

A memory stick would also be useful - as long as it’s a usable size.

How about a notebook - but one that has pages that are web designing friendly. So lined out for grid layouts or something…

I don’t get to go to any interesting events, other than local government ones. I’d be happy with a biro…

The dConstruct 2007 bag is my favourite and most used item. Its a cloth shopping bag. I keep it in my handbag and it means I don’t have to use those nasty plastic carrier bags. I use it nearly every day. One important factor is that it has long handles so I can use it on my shoulder, and its washable :) I love it and was quite disappointed they didn’t have them this year too.

@Neil Bradley: Book and a nice bottle of Blue Nun can be yours

@Anthony Casey: Tea is important, you’re so right. Perhaps we should give away branded tea bags? What a cool idea.

@Paul Annett: I loved the branded bananas idea, that was genius.

@prisca: We do have something special planned for that background

Assuming iPhones, Macbook’s and 52” HD Tvs are out of the running it definitely has to be a T-shirt.

Whereas people will already have a laptop sleeve, a mug etc. They are always going to want more T-shirts. A well designed T will be both a memento and a practical item not to mention provide ‘free’ advertising.  It’s always useable even if just for when you’re painting and decorating! The challenge lies in making sure the sizes fit both the pip-squeak and the more portly frame.

As another suggestion though, how about a limited edition print - perhaps by Ophelia Chong? Personally I’d rather like that. Now, I just need to sort out funding my ticket.

I have several laptop bags and don’t need any more!  The laptop sleeve from AEA, however, has been put to work.

My favorite swag was @media2008 SF’s messenger bag followed closely by the WDN08 canvas bags.  I actually use the WDN bag more and it’s been helping me save the environment.

As a computer junkie I have no use for pens and when I do I’m very particular.  You can have all my black in pens, I write only in blue ;)

Never received a mug, that might be a winner if it was high enough quality.  All my Starbucks addict co-workers could certainly use a travel mug.

I agree with Paul that the Webstock 08 laptop bag is fantastic. Heavy duty slick canvas type material, and they came in 8 different designs.

I still use it most days.

off the top of my head…

1. laptop sleeves
2. coffe mugs, geeky ones
3. anime plush toys, to throw in office when tired ;-)
4. t-shirts

pretty much anythings good, but if it’s also functional (aka you can wear / use / throw it) that’s miles better and way more fun!

;-)
