Malarkey is Andy Clarke, a creative designer with a passion for accessibility and web standards. This is his personal website.

MIX and match events

A busy few months of travel are ahead in Malarkey world. I’m very much looking forward to what’s coming up, to meeting old friends and making new ones. I can’t imagine another industry where I would have been made so welcome by people so willing to share their hospitality and friendship. No matter what part of the world I find myself in.

North East Usability and Accessibility

It was a great pleasure to be invited to speak about web standards and usable design at the North East Usability and Accessibility (NEUA) group meeting in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the 15th February.

Andy talked more about the specifics of accessibility, showing us example sites and coding that had been used, and comparing the accessibility and usability of websites to the difference between driving hundreds of miles up the A1 and trying to navigate similarly between from Heaton to Nortumbria University (about 2 miles apart).

Jack Pickard

I’d like to say a big thank-you to all the fantastic people who made my trip to the North East so memorable.

W3C Technical Plenary and WG Meeting Week

February sees me making a short hop to Mandelieu in France to hang around in corridors looking shifty at the W3C Technical Plenary and WG Meeting. Having never been close to a W3C event, I’m hoping to learn a lot about what is new in Microformats and particularly CSS3. I’m also looking forward to hooking up with Tantek Celik and meeting people that I have got to know by reputation face-to-face.

How To Be A Web Design Superhero: SXSWi 2006, Austin Texas

March is SXSWi time again and this year will see myself and Andy Budd getting together to put our underpants over our trousers to present How To Be A Web Design Superhero.

In today’s fast moving environment, the web is changing almost daily. Web designers must know not only their own craft, but appreciate the craft of others. They must understand the needs of their clients, and their clients. They understand what works today, but keep an eye on the future. In short, they must be superheroes. From dealing with new technologies or techniques, to handling clients and managing projects effectively, this entertaining and informative session will deal with issues which face designers every day.

How To Be A Web Design Superhero"

This year’s SXSWi will see the biggest BritPack invasion ever and I hope that Superhero will be a lot of fun and little informative too.

The Future of IE: MIX 06, Las Vegas

March 20th to 22nd and my dice rolling practice will be put to good use as I head for Vegas for MIX 06, a 72-hour conversation between web developers, designers and business leaders and with a keynote by a certain Mr. Bill Gates. I’ll be sitting on a panel, ’The Future of IE’, which I know will be a fascinating experience for a devout Camino using Mac owner.

Andy Clarke, Art Manion (CERT), Dean Hachamovitch. Join a discussion about the future roadmap for Internet Explorer. We present an overview of the direction we envision beyond IE7, hear from some industry experts about what they’d like us to do, and then hold an open discussion panel to take your input to help shape the future of IE.

Session Details

If you are going to be attending any of these events, I’ll be looking forward to meeting you.

@ Patrick: I’m looking forward to @media too and to sharing the panel with you.

@ Robin: I’m not sure about any MIX06 podcasts but more information might be on the MIX web site.

@ Trovster: MultiPack looks like a great group. Our schedule is pretty stacked for the time being but I’m sure we’d love to come to Brum for a beer and a balti at some point in the future.
